Winter Has Fallen Upon America

"Winter Has Fallen Upon America"

by J Stergis LES

Winter has fallen upon America

Or so they say.

Some harken backward

When things were supposedly better days

But for who?

Me?  We?  Or just you?

Equality and opportunity never applied to all of us.

Not for women, descendant slaves, or the indigenous?

So it begs to question, whose memories of America do you seek?

Land of the Brave?

Former slaves?

Newer immigrants whose hopes were bleak?

You seemed to have erased the times when America the Great

Stumble through periods of being drunken, violent, and weak

She always needed some measure of exploitation to rise to her feet

Yet, for America to truly become invincible

She needed time to mature her "all men are created equal" principles

It's in these moments that she has stood

Equality and opportunity shifted neighborhoods

And hands

Perhaps the real reason why Western Oligarchs want the minions to disband?

But, now it is up to the common man

To believe, cherish and understand

People are greater working together

No matter our individual pursuits or endeavors

Not man over a woman, or woman over a man

This is what it is to be human.

Soon one day this winter season will come to an end

The twilight of winter, the rebirth of spring will begin

When our surviving descendants look back,

What will they say of us then?

That we humans of today

Were so selfish and hateful in every way

That we nearly destroyed each other

When we are all truly just family and friends?

Stay Woke Or We Will Perish.

By JStergis L.E.S.

From a distance it would seem that in recent years, America and the UK are both embroiled in national battles of Conservatives vs Liberals. But, a closer look into the details reveals a more pernicious battle at hand. This battle is between those who have money and power and don't want to share it  - and everyone else. All religious, social, moral, and economic principles are null and void when today's "Conservatives" are confronted on sharing money and power with the very masses they depend on.

Here in the US, the once morally strong Republican party, the party of Lincoln, has devolved over the last 55 years.  They seem to be now be a party of unprincipled misfits, racists and malcontents. This descent may have started during the 1960's when many white Conservatives in the South and Midwest left the Democratic party. But, it quietly snowballed into an immovable object since the Reagan administration.  Once upon a time, there were honorable members of the party who served. But, they have either left, retired or died.  They have been replaced by people who have no principles whatsoever.  This purge continues to this day.  The primary goals of the new misfits are twofold: money and power, nothing more.

The sick, the needy, the disenfranchised, war veterans, laborers, teachers - are all background noise to be controlled to achieve the aforementioned two primary goals.  It is really sad.  Why?  Because it is healthy to have a room with a variety of opinions and cross-cultural ideas, so that we can better form our nation and create policies to include all. America, the country, does better when all Americans, the people, do better.

But with this group, they spend every waking moment attacking any notion of progressive thinking that actually might benefit people struggling in daily financial, social and ethnic inequalities. It is hard to fathom that this current politicos actions are based on the same principles that Lincoln ruminated in his darkest hours during the Civil War.

Lincoln fought for the unification of our country. These people fight only for the grab of power from the majority. They even dared to fly the Confederate flag in our nation's Capital, during last January's insurrection. I do not believe this would have sat right with Lincoln, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan or either Bush. In fact, I know that it would not have sat right with any of them.

You can search online yourself, and see that all three of Reagan's children, and the administrators in charge of the Reagan library, all rejected the use of the Reagan name by the Trump administration. This is how far off the road we have allowed these people to go. Quite a number of you voters are complicit.  These people are terrible for government.  But, it's some of you out there who voted them in.

It is not Liberalism, or Conservatism that's destroying America. It's Nihilism and the complete rejection of laws, morality and long held democractic principles. Right now, it's the far Right leading the way in eroding these values.

Everyday these new, so-called, right leaning politicians and their supportive media, spend countless hours making any positive ideas, slogans and principles be perceived as horrible or destructive.  Meanwhile they make their own morally decrepit ideas and principles sound beneficial for everyone. Yet, it is only they and their ilk who are the beneficiaries. Moderates and leftists who label themselves as "politically enlightened", "politically aware", "socially aware", and "liberal" on a daily basis are drawn out as life threatening political, and moral enemies.  It's insanity. These are our own people. Our own families and friends interwoven into our history. We are all Americans.

Why morally decrepit?  Because these new politicians themselves are hiding, overlooking, and disregarding all the the same corrupt things, that they claim the other side is doing.  They cover for the most corrupt behaviors within their own party and within their own souls.

No time in world history has any nation or empire been able to survive based on such blatant and overt corruption and hypocrisy.  This group do not want any check and balance of their own wrongdoings. They want zero accountability, while labeling everyone who doesn't agree with them, as mortal enemies to the common man who must be eviscerated.

Only today's current political right can make the word or notion "aware" or "woke" appear to be a skewed ideology or the thinking pattern of an enemy of the state.  Being open minded is not a curse, nor is it a complete cure. It's just a better way of thinking to open dialog and work towards a resolution, than when you have a close mind. We all have to strike compromises in our personal and professional lives, without tearing each other down. Why should the political theater be any different?

I leave you all with this thought:  The antonym of "woke" is asleep. The opposite of open minded is close minded. Being woke is better than being a sleeping, close minded, malcontent pretending to know all the concerns of people around me. I would rather be woke and miss my mark, then asleep and miss it all. #staywoke

Folks, love must win. For if it doesn't, then there will be nothing left to fight for, except to serve the tyrants, or become one.

"Displaced"
By JStergis

Do you see the orange smoke in the sky?
How can this be, do you ever wonder why?

Why can't we ever see the truth?
The flames that affects me, also affects you.

What does it take for me to get through?
How much longer do we wait until there's nothing left we can do?

We're not ready to be displaced.
We cannot find a planet to replace.

"We Always Find A Way" by JStergis L.E.S

We Always Find A Way
By JStergis L.E.S

Every generation
Of every nation
Eventually faces a challenge or foe
That will forever define them so
And when darkness holds the day
We always find a way

A way to rekindle hope in the night
A way to bring back our soul to the light.

Every woman and man
Has to try to comprehend
When they must take a stand
When circumstances demand.
For fear will create unlikely heroes
And fear exposes those driven
by weaker egos.

Yet when darkness holds the day
We always find a way
A way to rekindle hope in the night
A way to bring back our soul to the light.

My child hold up your head
Things are not hopeless or sad
As they may appear to be.
Remember good follows bad,
After the tears and blood shed.
Just like the ebbs and flows of the sea.

Just keep your eyes focused
Every inch gained a better prognosis.
Remember when darkness holds the day
We always find a way
A way to rekindle hope in the night
A way to bring back our soul to the light.

"The Baron In The Tower" by John S LES

"The Baron In The Tower"

By John S LES

Who's the baron sitting atop the golden tower?
He became a king wielding all kinds of power.
Stopping intellectual progress in just one single hour.
Sweet grapes of wrath, now suddenly gone sour.
So much greed and dirty deeds, makes you wanna shower.
We have local leaders, but to money they all cower.
We the People must take back our power.
Plant positive seeds with positive deeds
And grow them into flowers.
Stop the blaming and hate gaming -
Or our souls it will devour.
To give our children a future - we must empower!
Time to get busy doing,
Before we're in ruins -
Switching representatives is our choice.
Let Lady Liberty hear our voice
Time to stand up in this 11th hour!

"Downpour" by John S LES

"Downpour"

by John S LES

Evil follows us, sometimes overwhelms us
Like a downpour, or a heavy heart's pain.
But, we must keep our heads up,
Put our best foot forward,
Cause the Sun will surely follow the rain.

"Love Was Here" by John S LES

"Love Was Here"

photo and article by John S LES

A recent visit to the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in Brentwood, NY, formally the Pilgrim State Hospital, allowed me to look at how when love and positive direction work in unison, they are a powerful force.  When those two emotions divorce each other, they can leave nothing but ruin.  However, even in the ruins, you can witness the love, the life, the energy of people that used to exist.

Covering nearly a nearly 2,000 acres are numerous abandoned buildings and that once made this entire facility it's own, independent "city" within Brentwood itself.  In it's peak it housed some 12,500 patients, with a total campus population of some 16,000 people.  That's a larger population than many towns throughout the rest of Long Island, and across the United States.  Pilgrim State Hospital was created in 1931 to harbor the overflow of psychiatric patients from New York City.  Pilgrim State Hospital campus covered so much land and space t it's own independent operation so massive that it had it's own farm, complete with pigs, train station, police, firemen, church, water tower and cemetery.  It's campus borders touched four different towns on Long Island.

Today, only a few of main buildings remain operational.  The rest of the campus lays dormant, abandoned, slowly eroding to the laws of Mother Nature, vandals, trespassers, and forgotten life stories.  But, there once was love here.  There once existed a facility that for better or worse, for the good of the state of New York, housed working people, doctors, and patients.

Many will speak of the lobotomies and other medical practices that were done here.  Many of these procedures are no longer practiced and are now considered extreme and cruel.  However, there was a life here, a living campus of working people who were placed in a large and very isolated world.  For many who worked here in this small community - this wasn't just a job, it was a way of life.

Love was once here in these abandoned parts.  For more on this facility please view this website or this independently made YouTube video.  And of course enjoy my pictures below!

The Real Life "Dance Moms" by John S LES

The Real Life Dance Moms

by John S LES

If you were to watch only watch "Reality TV" you would think that all mothers associated with dance are these self-absorbed, living through their children, dispirited women.  I will admit that there may be some adult mothers (and fathers) who do behave like that in dance - as well as in sports and other activities in which their kids are involved.  Such bad behavior on the parent's part is disappointing to see.  However, I am blessed in that with the particular set of "dance moms" that I personally know - in that they are all beautiful, kind and caring people.  They support each other, they support their kids as well as other people's kids.  So to my beautiful friends who happen to be "dance moms", this pictorial is my Mother's Day gift to all of you for raising such beautiful and positive young women - Happy Mother's Day!

"Don't Stop Believing" Advocating Our Performing Arts

Amanda Fiorentine at the Caitlin Boyle Memorial
Scholarship performance this past April, 2016.

"Don't Stop Believing: The Case for Advocating Our Performing Arts"

by John S LES

This past January, 2016 the multiple Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Billy Joel directed his Joel Foundation to donate $1 million dollars over the next two years to help keep afloat Long Island's High School for the Arts.  The LIHSA has seen it's enrollment drop to less than half of it's total student capacity.  That drop in enrollment and the subsequent loss of tuition revenue has brought the school to the precipice of shutting it's doors. Click this link for more on that story.  But, the LIHSA's problems are indicative of a nationwide drop off of support and attendance for all of the performing and visual arts, and is bringing us all to a crossroad.  Click this New York Times article for more on this trend.

With our current state of television and music entertainment, it is easy to see how our younger generation has lost their understanding of the spiritual value of the performing and visual arts. Everything today is fast paced, electronically dependent, with various celebrities flaunting their riches. Every newcomer in the arts is looking at the fame and fortune for joining in.  Have we forgotten that every nation's arts are a reflection of that nation's soul?  This is an incontrovertible, historical truth throughout the world.  From instrument play, to singing, and dance, to painting, film-making and photography - the best performance and visual artists have reflected and inspired some of the greatest advancements in all of our cultures for thousands of years. Click here for a wikipedia synopsis on performing arts history in both Western and Eastern civilizations.  The love of fame and fortune cannot be the sole reason for becoming an artist.

Yet today there is so much commercialism and monetary value attached to the arts, that we are missing the point of the arts itself.  At the end of the day, artists perform, paint, sing, dance, act, and do magic tricks - for the love of the art itself.  But, let me be quite clear, there is room for both a commercial aspect of the arts and a spiritual appreciation of the arts.  Not everyone wants to be a "starving artist".  Perhaps, at the very least, an adequately fed one?  It's just that the lure of money and fame shouldn't be the prevailing factor as to why someone should invest their child, their spirit, or their time into becoming an artist.

I am calling for parents, entertainers, performers alike to continue to encourage our younger generation to pursue the arts for the sake of the survival of the arts themselves.  I am also encouraging anyone and everyone reading this post to do whatever they can in their daily lives to support the arts and artists in all aspect of the arts.  Either by donations, attendance or voting for community and school leaders who also support the arts.  Communities need to maintain and continue to build facilities and venues to allow artists their creative outlets.  Not every kid needs to be a star athlete, or movie star, or a Wall Street hot shot.  Let us not waste the positive efforts of Mr. Joel and his foundation.  We too must join in the fight, and help the arts flourish in this 21st century.

I welcome any and all, who would like to join me to help rekindle a spark in the arts here on Long Island.  Social and business entrepreneurs, or simply strangers can feel free to contact me, or view my work here of all my friends and associates in various art forms.  I am reachable through here, FacebookTwitter, or Instagram.

Without further adieu, with the help of friends involved in the dancing arts on Long Island, I wanted to use their pictures to help make the visual/performing arts case to remind all of us as to why we need to be proactive supporters of ALL of our performing arts.

Starting with Mrs. Stacie Nelson-Hoyt, of "The NY Dancers Studio" located in both East Meadow and Kings Park, Long Island.  In addition to her schools, Mrs. Nelson-Hoyt is also the director and choreographer of the esteemed Dance Theatre Company. She is also a graduate of the Long Island High school for the Arts.  The focus of her schools is to teach strong and masterful techniques to their students rather than focus on competition dance.  Her students span from 3 years old into adulthood, and are frequently given the opportunity to participate in "Master" classes instructed by professional dancers.  Her students perform in annual shows including "The Nutcracker" and in benefit shows like the fundraiser for the Caitlin Boyle Memorial Scholarship at Marist College.   Caitlin Boyle was a young dancer who died of meningitis while attending Marist College.  The NY Dancers Studio benefit show was performed in Greenlawn, Long Island, NY.  They allowed me to bring my camera and capture the following moments!

beautifiul, graceful and uplifting to all around them!

Lastly, here is the daughter of another friend of mine.  This is 15 year old
Kira Chu!  Kira is a hip hop style dancer from another school, who has been
dancing since she was just two years old.  Although she does compete, she really
loves dancing in various styles and hopes to do so professionally.  She has a
Justin Bieber audition video here.  Here's another video of her in a competition.
She's a great kid and is well grounded.  I wish her absolutely all the very best in
her journey!

I would like to thank all of my friends who helped me put this post together.  I also have a special thanks to my friends and family in the performing arts who allowed my and my camera to capture them while rehearsing or performing.  I will continue to lend my skills to help promote and show the world the powerful performances and moments that you are all quite capable of!

My next post will be of some of the real life, "Dance Moms" this coming Mother's Day!  So stay tuned!  Subscribe to my blog by simply dropping your email in the page in box and get my latest posts emailed right to you.

"Sweet Memories"

"Sweet Memories"
by John S LES

It is always nice to have sweet or fond memories of our experiences.  Whether that experience is a person, place or thing, it always good to have that fond thought from time to time.  We must also remember to live our lives going forward and to try to create new and complimentary fond experiences in our lives.  A friend allowed me to take this photo of her as I am pursuing a new business venture in the arts.  I would like to thank her and all of my encouraging friends from Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and of course here.  Everyday we must have the courage to live our lives and not just exist.  So lets get out there my friends...lets go live!

"What Color Is Hate" by John S LES

"What Color Is Hate"

photo and words by John S LES

Tell me dear brother do you wake up with a angry heart?
Tell me dear sister does your drudgery begin before your day even starts?

Tell me little brother do you wake up climbing a never ending hill?
Tell me little sister do you wake up wanting to swallow a bottle of pills?

Tell me dear father do you struggle to pay the bills?
Tell me dear mother do you panic when your babies get ill?

Did someone on TV, your family, or maybe your town hall...
Did they tell you there's someone to blame  - for once and for all?

Did they teach you, trick you, promise some kind of change?
All they wanted was your vote, money or loyalty in exchange.

Did they blame women, men, white or black, a Protestant or a Jew?
Did they convince you to hate someone - who didn't look like you?

Did they walk your mind down an angry path, for which all logic escapes?
Did they convince you to be your own judge of everyone else's fate?
From all that you learned, did they tell you what color is hate?

Tell me dear brother does this hatred make you feel like a better man?
Tell me dear sister, can you explain everyone's struggles all over the land?

Do you think it's cool to work for less than minimum wage?
How do you think Big Business makes billions in this modern age?

If you think life is so unfair, then run to Heaven's Gate.
Walk up to the alter, cast the angels aside, and please pontificate.

Tell us all - the causes for your oppression, it's not too late.
And when you tell us please explain what is the color of hate.

I leave you with this last thought, and you better believe it's true.
There's someone out there blaming all of their miseries right there on you.

But you're innocent you say - who can blame their hate on thee?
It's because you don't own hatred - it's not your monopoly.

"What Do We Truly Know About Each Other?" by John S LES

"What Do We Truly Know About Each Other?"

by John S LES

What do we truly know about each other?  From our siblings, long time friends or significant others that we may eventually live with, how much time does most of us spend trying to really get to understand one another?  So few times we get to meet someone, a stranger perhaps, that we interact with and feel that we know them and vice versa, better than people who may have known us far, far longer.  Why is that?  What happens in the daily course of our lives that we end up tuning out the very people closest to us?

Of course there are lucky people who do have close friendships, relationships from the beginning of their lives and over the arch of a long time period.  That is definitely a possibility.  But for most of us, it is not the case.  For the majority of us, we only see and react to the person we see in front of us, or the person that is presented to us in the limited light of our conscious observation of them.  It's impossible to know what they may be like when they aren't around us.  Just because you have seen one side of a person, doesn't mean that you've seen all sides of them.

Remember to make time for one another.  Remember to reach out for one another. That goes for your family, friends and significant other.  Social media and mobile devices may allow us to speak with more people consistently, however, we need to remember to also spend some quality time with the people around us.  We need to not get lost in this maelstrom of technology and social overreach.  We need to try to remember to really get to know one another.

"Bird Brain"

"Bird Brains"

by John S LES

All over the world most people in just about every culture make fun of the intelligence of birds, yet science has proven otherwise.  Birds are actually quite intelligent.  They are highly organized.  They are all very social.  And recently it has been revealed that they have the reasoning ability of 7 year old children.  They remain the only other species, outside of mammals, that can recognize and understand their own reflection.

A couple weeks ago, I walked through my neighborhood and noticed about 20 pigeons sitting on the telephone wire.  Most of the pigeons were clearly dark grey and black.  Every so often, there would be a pigeon that was clearly a very light grey and white mix.  Yet all of the birds remained huddled together communicating among each other.  I could not help but to think of trying to understand why can't human beings be more like that?  We have two arms, two legs and two eyes.  We are only separated by skin pigmentation.  We should all just have bird brains?  Maybe then we could learn to better get along with each other?

Where did our love go?
